Hey guys my new custom built tank is finally almost ready for shipping. 605 litre, 120cm x 120cm tank. Went to check on it just now and it's looking good! Here's a pic:

They called me in and asked me whether I want another ramp for the dock on the other side (as you can see in the pic the dock only has one ramp), I was like yeah! And the dock can be removed easily for cleaning. And I plan to put two or three extra floating docks along the other sides of the tank. All looking pretty good so far :) will update once it's all set up at home!

Looking great so far Kerry! You're obviously getting a custom made stand too.

Yup, but a cabinet though, as it will be put right in the living room so I think cabinet is both better looking and more safe from my dogs. But I asked for the left and right side of the panel of the cabinet to be drilled off a section close to the top so that I can put tubing through. :)

Good idea! That will keep them tidy and out of the way.

Just wondering if I can put natural log in there? Like those that they sell in fish shop or pet shop? Will that affect the pH or water quality?
And besides floating plants like duckweed and azolla, what other plants I can put in there? I don't want to put fake plants anymore and want to start having live plants in there.

What do you guys put in your turtle tanks?

Hi Kerry, Val, Elodea, Duckweed and Azolla are the best aquatic plants you can offer your Murray River turtle.

Unfortunately you will have to establish the Val (Ribbonweed) and the Elodea far in advance of putting your turtle in there otherwise he will demolish them before they have a chance to grow a good root system. You will also need special plant lighting as well as your UVB 10.0 reptile fluorescent lighting.

The log will need to be soaked for a number of weeks in a bath or large tub to remove the tannin from the water and make it water logged. You will also need to add a few Purigen pillows to your shopping list to add to your filter if you haven't purchased them already.

Below is a photo of a tank set up properly. The val has been established in the tank and there are some logs and clay pots cut in half to provide hiding spots for the turtles to retreat into. The pots (cut in half) need to be large enough for your turtle to turn around in so as not to become stuck.

Hey Craig, thanks for that. So any sort of log that they sell at pet shop will be fine to use as long as I soak it in water for a few weeks? Do I just soak in tap water or dechlorinated water? Do I change the water daily? I heard you can boil the log to get all the tannin out instead of soaking?

No I never used Purigen before, just looked it up and will get some. It says 250ml treats 1000 litres, so since my tank is 600 litres, is the 250ml ok? Or should I get two 100ml bagged ones, and put one in each filter? Or do I need more for turtle tank?

You'll definitely need to get them in the bags or you'll lose the Purigen. I'd recommend 3 for a tank your size.

So 3 of the 100ml ones?

And can you please have a look at my questions for the log above? :p

I use Golden Vine driftwood in my turtle tank. I just like it because of its natural look.

Hey Kev, did you soak it in tap water for a few weeks or just boil them before use?

I just threw them in my tank when I was setting in up originally back in 2012, they floated for about a week and a half before becoming waterlogged and sinking.

After they sank, I positioned them where I wanted them. This was during my tank's cycling stage.

Flash forward a few years and that's the final product.

Sorry Kerry, I was distracted by my dogs wanting to be fed.
Yes, 3 of the 100ml ones in bags.
Kev has already answered your log question, so rest assured it's good information.

Ah OK, thanks for the info. I'll go out to look around pet shop and LFS and see what they have tomorrow. Do you need to take the driftwood out to wash or brush once in a while?

It all depends on if it starts to grow any fungus on it. Sometimes it will grow a white furry fungus on it if it hasn't been soaking for long or hasn't been boiled.

I got my Golden Vine pieces from Petbarn. It's only ever grown a little green moss/algae which my Siamese Algae Eaters take care of. Besides, I like the aged look of it.

Do your turtles try to eat any of the algae eaters? I always want to get some as I have some algae growing in my current tank but I was afraid my turtle will eat them, after all he had successfully eaten 100 feeders in like a week or less and he's only 1.5 year old...

My turtles are adult short-necks so no they don't waste their time chasing fish they can't catch when they've got adequate plant material available to them.

Hey guys, the tank is FINALLY here!!!!!! They had some problem with making the dock steady as it's removable, but that's all fixed :)

Here's a pic, my Doberman as comparison :)

Hope you don't end up with cracked tiles... My tank isn't quite that big at 4×3×2 but still weigjs over 750 kilos and sits on a solid concrete slab covered with carpet.
